Under Construction

When we took our trip to the zoo last week we had a chance to see how the construction was coming along on the Fulton Road Bridge. This bridge spans a waterway, railroad tracks and large valley. The zoo is in the valley, affording us a rare look up at the work.This crane towers over the bridge and the zoo. I thought a photo from right underneath would look more imposing, but I guess you had to be there. It sure felt imposing!I'm glad they are keeping the large arch character that the old bridge had. It was a beautiful bridge that had suffered a lot from neglect.

This link has some photos of the old bridge, the demolition, and some photos of the new construction. It doesn't look like they will hit their deadline. Summer 2009 is almost over!

This was an opportunity we could not pass up. We were at the zoo looking at all the various displays, and we saw this: There should have been a placard on the fence indicating that these are North American Construction Workers.

Heavy Equipment

Remember Tonka trucks? What fun for young children! Especially the yellow construction equipment (forget those plastic toys).

When we took our trip to Florida in February I drove past the US Headquarters of JCB Construction Equipment. It was a pleasant diversion to look at the display of equipment on their grounds. I drive for a few hours with my family sleeping and hoping the good radio station I had going would not give out on me.

That's when I came upon a giant's landscape with giant boy's toy trucks artfully arranged to show off what each piece of equipment could do. I thought it looked like a fun place to get some photos, but I opted instead to keep both hands on the wheel and let my family sleep.

On the drive home I had another opportunity. These photos, taken at speeds somewhere between 65 and 75 mph, do not begin to do justice to the real thing.

The sight broke the monotony of the road and kept me going safely till Rick woke up from his nap.
