A news story on my morning radio show has set me off today. It seems Boston University is joining some other large US universities in banning swearing and race and sex-based taunts at its sports events.
(Okay. No problem there. But some students will undoubtedly complain that their freedom of speech is being violated. The university has to help them learn some decorum since their parents did not do it when they were children.)
It had gotten so bad hardened career NCAA hockey officials were complaining about the taunts and the atmosphere in there. Now offenders will be ushered out of the stands and maybe even banned from the arena.
(Wow! Sounds pretty bad. What discipline is being enforced on the field, I wonder? Will the penalty box be overflowing with foul-mouthed name-callers? You know the players are not silent when they play the game.)
(Then this next takes the cake--)
"Sports won't be fun anymore." That is a quote from some pathetic Boston University student. You mean to tell me that now you can't even have fun without swearing? All that education is really doing you a lot of good isn't it. You have learned to express yourself with all the finesse and sagacity of an inner-city public-schooled fourth-grader.
(Maybe your seats can be filled with alumni who are delighted to find they can bring their children to sports events again.)

Our family got moved down to much better seats once several years ago at an indoor soccer game because the guys we were sitting next to would not stop yelling obscene words. We didn't want our girls exposed to that kind of vocabulary!
Oh, and Marie, college kids can't have fun without getting drunk either. It's like a rule or somethin'.

I hear it al the time, not just at football matches. In the town centre the other day there was a bunch of lads shouting obsceneties at each other...they don't know any better...and when I think that my father in law apologises to me and the girls every time he say "bl**dy", so many thing are acceptable nowadays that were reprehensible 30 years ago! You're right, if I'd have gone up to them and asked them to moderate their language...they'd have told me to "go forth and multiply"!
