I was sad for the Engineer when the Cleveland Indians traded his favorite player, Mark DeRosa, in June. Today I'm sad for both of us as Cliff Lee was traded.
I don't even know what we got for him, as I didn't have the heart to listen. Lee is the only thing Tribe fans had pulling them into the stadium this year. His story as a come back kid over the last couple of seasons made him the heart of the team.
You take hard knocks when you're in the cellar.

Today's the Day!
At 1:05 Cleveland time my radio will be on, school will be done for the day and I'll bring out my knitting. It is time for Baseball!

I suppose the forecast for 2 - 6 inches of snow around the radio station's listening area confirm that it is a good thing the Tribe is opening in Texas. Hopefully our weather will do that typical Cleveland thing and it will be 60 degrees and sunny for the home opener on Friday.

Baseball Begins, But...
...It is different this year.
I love making the first on-air ball game of spring training my own personal school holiday. This year I've been cheated out of that holiday.
Not that that will impact my listening to the game. With the Tribe moving to Goodyear, AZ, they are in a different time zone.
Their game will not start until 3:05 in the afternoon Cleveland time. Hopefully, the kids will have completed their regularly scheduled school work by that time.
So my annual day to sleep in, laze in front of the computer, pick up the knitting needles and tune in to the radio with no constraints on time goes the way of all flesh. Instead I'll get to listen to the game while making dinner and cleaning the kitchen. Or maybe walking on the treadmill.
In any case, I'll still be listening.

Tribe Deja Vu
The last time the Tribe made a trade, we had a remarkable coincidence: The Engineer's rally towel had fallen from its mounting and lay heaped on the floor doing a laundry impersonation. I wrote about it here.
This morning I woke to the news that the Indians had made a 12-player deal with the Mariners and the Mets. Before I heard any details coming over the airwaves I went downstairs to greet the Engineer and make some breakfast.
And what do I find on his floor? Again! I think instead of a rally towel we should call it a trade towel.
It landed atop the Engineer's tae kwon do bag.

Tribe Memory
While diving into some much needed cleaning of my office that dark room in the corner of the basement where I store stuff, I uncovered some Tribe memories.
I thought I spied a fallen roll of gift wrap on the floor of the closet I was cleaning. Closer inspection showed the paper was wrapped in plastic.
"A new roll?" I wondered if it was generic or Christmas or floral or masculine.
As it turns out, 'twas none of those, but something better. I'd relocated a poster from the Cleveland Indians centennial season. Nice!
It must have been a premium at the ball park, because it is not the sort of thing I'd spend money on. What a nice thing to decorate a boy's room with, though. Wheels are turning in my mind. Imagine how it would coordinate with these curtains on the Engineer's window!
Later, in another part of the extremely cluttered room I found three of these posters.
I remember receiving them last year when we exited the then called Jacob's Field after the division-clinching game. I guess it really has been a very long time since I've cleaned this room. As we were handed them I remember wondering what happens to the thousands of posters ball clubs print in preparation for this day and then the team loses that last opportunity to clinch?
I re-rolled all the posters together, keeping them in one place this time. Perhaps when the Engineer outgrows the kites and airplanes decorating his room now he will enjoy a sports theme. He loves baseball, and hates to miss an Indians game. I am a little worried though. Twice this week he sought me out to tell me, "Seriously, Mommy, I like the Cubs." And a few days later, "I seriously like the Cubs, Mommy." Both times he had such earnest in his voice and on his face.

Late to the Party...
...But still so glad to be here!
Next year the upper deck facing will sport
another flag. Lets make it a gold one!
The family enjoys the game.
The central division championship flag is raised!
The statue of Bob Feller is dressed for
the occasion. Bob Feller, in the flesh, was in the
owner's box wearing the same shirt .
How about that Tribe!!!
The day was beautiful. Westbrook had a career high strike out game. The crowd was excited. Here are some of my favorite shots.
John Adams drumming the Tribe on to victory. He
is standing to the right of his drum under the
"of" in the Budweiser sign.

Magic
An off day is the longest day in the baseball season, but never more so than in September. Today the magic number sits at 3 with only ten, (or perhaps only nine) games to go in the season.
What is a magic number? A combination of the number of games a team (the Indians) must win and the number of games a division opponent (the Tigers) must lose for a team (the Indians) to clinch the division championship and therefore a spot in the post season playoff games.
The Indians may not get to play all 162 of their regular season games this year. Due to the Snowout of an entire series at the beginning of the season the Indians have had to make up more games than usual. If the game will not have a bearing on the standings of the Indians or the Seattle Mariners, it will likely remain unplayed.

Brewing
The rain is here and it is dark enough for our front lantern to shine brightly. Severe weather is brewing.
But that is not all. Inside I have a delightful new tea set to lend cheer to the drear, a gift from the Artist's friend, Tante Lila.
I'll have a cup of tea while I wait to learn whether the Cleveland Indians noon start will be rain delayed, a rain out, or a go.
The Artist joined Rick at work today for Take Your Child to Work Day and the Engineer does not like to drink anything but milk, so this will be tea for one.
Loud thunder echoes through the house as I enter this post. I'm glad the Indians games are broadcast on the same station that I listen to for severe weather warnings. I'd better save and post while I still have power.

Two Complete Projects
At last! The Pomatomus Socks are finished and I was able to show them off to my extended family for a few minutes on Sunday. They are a work of art indeed.
I'm not sure I did them justice, but I did learn a lot in knitting them up. I still need practice in keeping my stitches even with lace. I had the biggest problem keeping an even tension when beginning or ending a needle with a yarn over.
Somewhere after a toddler sweater and a man's sweater I have another pair of socks in my knitting queue. These, like the Pomatomus, were also designed by Cookie A. I found them with the help of Dances With Wool, who led me to this website. I was wowed by the designs! Lover of knee-socks that I am, I had to try one. I bought this Milicent pattern and I'll see how I can handle it, um, er, hopefully before summer's end ??? -- Who knows how long the "Tangy" toddler and "Complicated" man's sweater will take me.
Also over the weekend it came to my attention that Honey needed some pajamas. She has been sleeping in her clothes all this time. I found this pattern by Dawn Adcock on the web. The pattern was very clearly written and easy to follow.
I was not sure I'd have enough bits of yarn to complete the project in a solid color so I made the skirt and collar in gray. Honey, and the Artist were both pleased.
As a follow-up to my tribute to Tribe fan John Adams, I heard on the sports news this morning that Mr. Adams and his drum were being flown to Milwaukee for the Cleveland Indians home-away-from-home games against the Angels. As Indians announcer Tom Hamilton would say, "How About That!"

Beating the Drum
This is the exciting opening day of a new season for the Cleveland Indians. As I write, the grounds crew is scraping ice from the outfield. The Artist is outside trying to catch the big snowflakes in her mouth.
But all is well, John Adams and his drum are at Jacob's Field. The new season is up and running, and the hearts of the fans are warm. Click on the link!!! This is a special photo.
I love to hear the interviews on the radio with Mr. John Adams. He has been bringing his drum to Indians games for the last 34 years. He attends about 80 home games a year to cheer on the crowds these days. In the days when there were no crowds he led the drumbeat for the faithful few.

Opening Day
It seems the Indians never open the baseball season at home.
Again, this year they play their season opener in Chicago against the White Sox. I was compelled to note this important day here, and I'll be listening on the radio and wearing my old-style Tribe hat with the red C while going about my afternoon at home.
My Tribe will be treated to more blustery conditions when all the excitement comes to Cleveland for the home opener on Friday. Early forecasts call for a chance of light snow showers in the afternoon. I'll have my Chief Wahoo hat to keep me warm.

Baseball
This is a great month!
On February 15th Cleveland Indians pitchers and catchers report to spring training. As I will be out of town and away from my PC on that momentous upcoming Thursday, I'm celebrating early and changing my profile photo to match the season.
