Sometimes we are limited in time so we have a few quick rounds of the Pirate Game or Dominoes.
Other days we have a little more time before the bedtime routine needs to begin. We get out Trouble or Yahtzee, or every once in a while, Charades for Kids.
Then, every once in a while, we have no time constraints. Last night was one of those times. We resurrected a game that had been put away for years because the Engineer was not ready for it. We played Sorry! The Engineer's experience with Trouble had prepared him well, and he can read the cards well enough to have an idea of what to do.
During these family game times there are a few things Rick and I need to keep in mind. The Artist needs help with strategy and planning. The Engineer needs help coping with the frustrations that come with most games.Rick and I are looking forward to Monopoly and some of the other board games that take a longer amount of time. In fact, the Artist is old enough she should already be playing games like that. What games do you like to play together in your family?

I'm quite fond of Scrabble, D loves Cluedo and DH will always choose Trivial Pursuits. We bought some kids questions for Triv last year and it worked out really well. F is just about old enough for Hungry Hippos and Buckeroo!
At the dinner table, my husband would start a story and come to an interesting part and then Theo would take over. After he had embellished the story then Nick would take over and develop the character further. Then it was my turn etc. The story was usually uproaringly funny by the time we finished. My children would seldom play board games with me because they were active, active active and didn't want to sit.
Recently, Nick challenged me to a Sudoku race. Theo joined in. We copied the same puzzle and timed it. I collapsed under the pressure and came in third. I guess they would probably play board games with me now : )
A couple of our family members like board games and a few others don't very much. We do try to play them now and then for the more competitive among us. But it has been hard the last few years with a toddler in the house. When we do play, we like Monopoly, Landslide, Settlers of Catan, and Scrabble.
